winter storm this weekend

this weekend they are calling for a storm in IA rain, sleet and snow how bad is it looking?

That’s hard to say for sure but looks like northern Iowa and southern Minnesota will be the northern extent of the change over.

Storm moves out of Rockies Friday night. Snow begins S. Iowa Saturday morning with quick change over to freezing rain and sleet south. Northern Iowa could stay snow longer but too soon to tell.

one station said 6 plus inches another said 3-5 inches of snow.

What part of Iowa do you live? We should have a good idea today how much snow will fall?

I am an hour NE of Des Moines in central IA. this morning they are acting like we might get more ice then snow? what are your thoughts?

Traci,

This is a developing Winter Storm. In the old days we looked at surface observations and satellites during a storm to predict storm totals. Now days we have computer models that act out the storm in advance. In a perfect world this is what would happen but there are 10,000 variables yet to be introduced into the storm.

Here is what we know. The midlevel system will move over Northern Iowa. This will allow warm air to move north. This may be several hundred feet or 3000 feet thick depending on how strong the storm gets. As snow melts it takes heat out of the atmosphere. As sleet forms it releases heat into the atmosphere. There will be a point where equilibrium is reached. That is the snow line. At this time I believe the warm air advection is a little over done but how much is unknown.

As of this morning. It should start as snow everywhere in the state with 1-3 inches a safe bet. 2-4 inches look likely north and west of a line from Denison to Cedar Rapids.

I or someone else will start a Storm thread late today or in the morning. Stay tuned. I will keep an eye on your area.
