Girl's pyjamas catch fire after lightning strikes
By REBECCA CAMBER, Daily Mail

A seven-year-old girl narrowly escaped death when a powerful lightning bolt struck her bedroom, burning her pyjamas as she lay in bed.
Little Emily Holland was asleep when a shaft of lightning blew a hole in her bedroom ceiling, sending part of her nightclothes up in smoke.
The blast, described by witnesses as a fireball, burnt the arm and central stomach area of youngster's cotton pyjamas.

But miraculously she escaped with just a small scorch mark to her arm after the main impact of the blast missed her head by inches, leaving a four-inch long burn mark through her bedsheet and mattress.
During a violent storm just after midnight on Wednesday, lightning hit an aerial on the chimney stack above her bedroom, causing part of the roof to collapse, sending debris raining down on the youngster.
The bolt tore throughout the £300,000 four-bedroom house, blowing out light sockets. Her father John, 40, awoke when a 6ft clump of tumbling plaster fell onto his bed.
Fearing that the house may collapse, he ran upstairs, plucking Emily and her nine-year-old brother Luke from their beds before fleeing outside.
Miraculously, none of the family were seriously hurt and Emily's injuries did not require hospital treatment.

Unsafe
Yesterday they were recovering from the ordeal at a neighbour's house after the detached home in Locks Heath near Southampton was declared unsafe by experts.

Her mother, Melanie, 36, who returned home from a night shift at a nearby supermarket to discover the devastation, said: "The lightning lifted the roof up and has completely obliterated the upstairs of the house.
"The walls around light switches and electric sockets have collapsed and you see the sky through sections of the roof.
"The plaster boards from the ceiling have come down in 6ft clumps and a piece came down on my husband who was fast asleep and woke him up in bed.

"He leapt out of bed, threw a few clothes on and he flew round the house to grab Emily and Luke who were both sleepy and somewhat mesmerised.
"Emily must be the luckiest child alive."
The storm came after the family had just finished a £4,000 redecoration of their lounge.
Mrs Holland said: "It is absolutely devastating, although I don't think it has truly sunk in yet because we are all still so shaken.
"But I am so lucky because I have still have my children and everything in my house can be replaced."

Mr Holland, who works as a lorry driver, added: "The house looks like a bomb has hit it but our family is the most important thing.
"The house is just bricks and mortars which can be rebuilt - we feel very, very lucky that no one was badly hurt."

Mark Jones, press officer for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The house was struck by lightning which caused a massive power surge. This caused the light switches to explode and blow off the walls.
"The family are lucky there was no fire." Neighbour Andy Markham, 15, who watched the storm from his bedroom window, said: "It looked a bit like a fireball hit the chimney and I saw lots of black smoke and saw the debris fall everywhere."
The lightning strike comes after a 16-year-old girl was hit by lightning earlier this month when a one-billion volt struck her metal-framed bed, leaving her with burns to her hands touching the frame at the time.
