Last of the Low pressure areas associated with the mid level trof will form in the Gulf of Mexico Tomorrow.
This has the potential to be a major snow storm. Cold artic air moving SE today will get entrained on the North and Western side of this Storm. Initial Snow fall amounts look like 2-4 inches Northern Alabama, Mississippi, Eastern Tennesee, Extreme Northern Ga. Upstate SC. Western NC and Western Va. could receive 4-8 inches. Eastern North and South Carolina could get an inch or so as storm pulls out. Storm should move NE off the coast but the Tri-state area could still get 1-3 inches. Upper levels will be colder than surface. No Ice threat with this one. Cold artic air will move in behind the storm. Temps falling to near zero mountains of NC and Va. Temps falling to near 12F GSO Sunday morning. Path and strength of this storm are subject to change. All the ingredients for a Major Winter Storm are present. Dyndrite |

Funny how dyndrite you mentioned the chance of this in forums like monday/tuesday this week. Finally the local mets here in Raleigh are saying that Saturday bears watching here. Should be interesting with the onset of the cold Artic air. Do keep us posted.
And Spanky there does seem that ther may be a 3rd storm sometime wednesday/thursday next week from what I'm understanding but that's still a ways out. Last edited by tayfromnc; 01-17-2008 at 04:55 PM. |

Up-date.
Winter Storm Watches are being posted across the south. Satellite date shows Low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico about 150 miles SSE of Brownsville Texas. Rain is developing in Southern Texas. This rain should mix with sleet and snow later this morning in east Texas and northern Louisiana, Will update after 12Z run. Dyndrite |

Looking at some 12Z data, snow is falling in the NC and Va. Mountains with passage of modified Artic front. Next Artic push on Schedule moving through Iowa. Radar echoes are further north and west in Texas. A secondary moisture feed is developing in Southern Alabama and Georgia. None of the models picked up this moisture and orientation. Dyndrite |

Dyndrite, in your opinion is this a good sign or bad with the moisture forming more north and west for us; also do you think the artic front will make it in here before the storm gets here tomorrow in the carolinas.

Oooh. Do tell. My office today here in Raleigh is a buzz with talk of a significant event especially after the watches went up this morning. One of the long time meteorologist here in raleigh looked at there latest forecast system and said there could be some bands of 6-12" snows in the piedmont stretching north east into VA.

yeah its weird when I saw all the watches in your area and none in NW Sc at the moment; also there are Winter Storm watches now for the Birmingham Area In Alabama; but nothing in GA, SC yet thats the weird part. I guess they think it will skip the middle! I dont think so though; by this afternoon I think we will see more watches put out.

Impressed with cold in Tennessee and northern Mississippi 3-6 degrees colder than forecast in full sunshine. Dry air stuck against west side of mountains in east Tennessee. Been waiting on surface front to pass in western NC. Temps in the upper 30’s with forecast Temps in the mid 40’s. that would be a bust. Looks like forecast is about the same greatest snowfall looks to be 30 miles either side of a line from 30 miles N of Atlanta to 20 miles south of Charlotte NC to Raleigh NC to Elizabeth City NC. 3-5 inches of snow could fall with locally higher totals. The northern extent looks to be the Va, NC boarder. Dyndrite |
