Cold Wave Warning should be issued for Montana Sunday night and early Monday. A strong Artic front with temperature drops of 34 degrees Celsius will move SE through the area. On the back side expect blizzard conditions. Snow and blowing snow.

Cold Wave Warnings should be issued for North and South Dakota and Minnesota Monday and Monday night.

That is the mother of all cold fronts.

There is not much going on the East Coast except for the, “Nantucket Storm.” Heavy snow forecast for that area.

Things are starting to move out west. I have not talked about the California Storm. It has been impressive with more precipitation for a longer period of time then I have ever seen. If there is a such thing as a drought buster then that was one for sure.

The moisture is starting to move north as Storm forms in the Northern Rockies. Some locals will receive up to 4 ft of snow. As the artic front moves SE into the high plains a series of Storms will form and traverse the US.

The computer models do not handle Artic Air very well so a little climatology will need to be applied. Interactions with Mid level systems, Subtropical jet and effects of evaporative cooling will make next week a challenge with a, “Major Winter Storm,” a definite threat.

Hope every one had a good rest. The show starts today in the mountains out west and tomorrow in the high plains.

Surface Temperatures as of 5AM est. had fallen to -17F in northern Montana. Winds are NNW at 35 gusting to 50 mph. Temperatures yesterday were in the mid to upper 40’s in parts of Montana and North Dakota.

The Artic Front will work South and East the next 24 hours and effect Nebraska, Iowa Minnesota with falling temperatures and blowing snow.

The sub-tropical jet is active and a good moisture plume is heading NE out of Texas this morning. Blizzard conditions will develop from Colorado to parts of the high plains today.

The Artic air will have trouble moving South and this will develop a secondary storm late Wednesday and Thursday over Texas. This will allow snow to develop in Oklahoma North and East. The path of this storm is unknown at this time. Climatology would say, “Heads up,” Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.

I will try and slide an old song from that Kentucky philosopher in from time to time.

This is one of those times.
