Great Question Spanky.

Most of the time cold air banks against the Appalachians from the WNW with low pressure exiting from the NE.

Sometime Artic Air moves in from the NNW with high pressure to the NNE. You will see Warm air linger in Columbia SC with a SW or WSW wind. Wind will bank to the NNE or NW over NW North Carolina. The Key is rapid cooling with precip onset. I am not talking 5 degrees . I am talking from 50F to 32F.

Satellite data will show Clear skies South of Greenville-Spartanburg. The classic signature of the Mid -level trof moves east in advance. This is characterized by dryness aloft. Cold cloud tops will disappear, or cut off in mid and upper level moisture. Showers will develop west of Charlotte and show High level cold cloud tops as Disturbance moves NE. A classic Cyclonic signature will develop.

Radar data will show showers developing WNW of Charlotte NC along the mountains and develop precipitation patterns to the NW. Heavy showers or thunderstorms will develop over Up-State SC or along the boarder and move NE into Charlotte.

Cold air advection must be Active as temps fall rapidly. 850 mb 0c isotherm must be East or southeast with Dryness aloft enhancing vertical development and precip expansion.

Light pressure gradient over South Carolina is a must.

Any other questions please post. This is a complex scenario. Most don’t know it exist.

Up-date

18z surface date shows Warm air further north in Texas and Tennessee. High pressure further W. Southern high further west.

Pardon, but life is a *****. Call your local weatherman.

Latest surface data shows moisture moving east.

All I got to say is live by the model, die by the model.

Lets do it brother.
