I'm actually due north of that bright red band; don't think its thunderstorms; probably sleet; wouldn't you think so.

That is the rain/snow line.

Mid level dynamics dictate it from there.

so even if I'm well north of that line its warmer above me in the column to keep the precipitation all rain; correct

Sorry spanky, my computer went dead, power surge the technician said. I got me a better surge protector now.

When the radar looks out in a level plain the horizon drops. If the rain/snow line or transfer zone is in its sight you will see a line on the radar. Sleet tends to look like thunderstorms or flashing heavy patches on the radar loop.

During this storm received 1/8 inch of ice and dusting of sleet. Last night we had rain/snow mix as short wave moved east.

Models are still showing that deep trof just past 180 hrs. Cold be a cold stormy first of March. Either way stormy time for Iowa and Midwest. Good storm brewing today. Will start thread.
