Typhoon Chanchu Threatens Hong Kong
Friends
It seems likely that Typhoon Chanchu will strike very near Hong Kong within the next 60 hours. Conditions are ideal for intensification before landfall, as shearing elements are inland over mainland China and dry air intrusions are not an issue. A Category 4 or 5 strength is possible at time of impact, with the most likely course curving sharply northeast just after the eye reaches land (which I guess would happen Tuesday before 12N ET). effects from flooding rain are likely across far eastern China through Japan as the system links with the very obvious strong jet stream flow shown on GMS images. The remnant wave may also influence weather in the Aleutian Islands within 5 days.
