Default Serious Flooding in New England

Here is the latest BOX statement regarding the current situation in Southern New England.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Taunton Massachusetts
922 am EDT sun may 14 2006

..major flooding now occurring on the North Shore and travel is not
recommended...

Mesoscale update...
based on latest radar imagery and GFS middle level Omega fields we
expect the North Shore and portions of southern New Hampshire to have heavy rain throughout the day. The GFS quantitative precipitation forecast fields look good except for the fact that they have the heavy rain axis too far east based on current radar trends.

Major flooding across the North Shore continues with numerous roads
underwater. Travel is not recommended north of Boston as a very
serious situation is developing. Local officials continue to
compare this to the June of 1998 floods on the North Shore...but
conditions may approach the October of 1996 floods if current
expectations are met. We should see rain amounts between 10 and 15 inches on the North Shore by the time this is all said and done.

Otherwise...a lull in the precipitation has developed across
southeast Massachusetts but more heavy rain is developing south of the islands so this area should fill back in later this morning and into the
afternoon so the flooding threat continues in this region as well.

Also...any thunder that occurs should be isolated today but will go
ahead and insert a slight chance of thunder along and south of Massachusetts Pike as total totals approach 50 and there is a ton of middle level.

Near term update...(released earlier than the above)
heavy rain continues to spiral in off the ocean and covers southern
New Hampshire and eastern Massachusetts. Portions of southern New Hampshire and the North
Shore is being particularly hard hit with numerous reports of
flooding. The North River that runs through Peabody and Salem is
running near bankfull and is expected to overflow its banks at the
time of high tide.

Rainfall totals across the North Shore already range from 7 to 8.50
inches. Through 7 am...Peabody already has seen 7.78 inches of rain
and Lynn has had 8.71 inches. Local officials are comparing the
flooding in this area to the June of 1998 flood in this region which
was caused by training thunderstorms. We are not quite at The
Levels of the October 1996 flood but its getting worst. This is a
dangerous situation and travel is not recommended in this region.
The models appear to have the heaviest rain to far east and we
expect another several inches in this region. Portions of the North
Shore may see isolated rainfall totals near a foot by the time all
is said and done!

Across southeast Massachusetts heavy rain will also occur and we expected
flooding problems to increase through the day particularly in
Plymouth County.

All in all previous forecast is in good shape...but we will send an
update to increase probability of precipitation in our western zones as numerous rain showers are developing and models appear to far east with the heavy axis of rain.

My location has received 3.10" in the last 48 hours.

wow. Heres some more news on it.

N.H. Floods Force 100 People From Homes
WAKEFIELD, N.H.

Torrential rain washed out roads and forced about 100 people from their homes early Sunday.
Some areas of central New Hampshire had seen 7 inches of rain by early Sunday and forecasters said as many as 5 more inches might come during the day.

The state Office of Emergency Management said about 100 people were evacuated from their homes in Wakefield because of concern over the Union Village and Semens dams.

"There are a lot roads closed everywhere and parking lots and basements flooded," Emergency Management spokesman Jim Van Dongen said.
In Maine, dozens of roadways were flooded in southern part of the state and shelters were set up in Kennebunk and Ogunquit.

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney declared a state of emergency on Sunday, activating the National Guard and various state services to help communities respond to the storm.
Boston had picked up 4.35 inches of rain in 24 hours. Farther north, Newburyport collected 5.83 inches over the same period, according to the National Weather Service.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Taunton Massachusetts
507 am EDT Monday may 15 2006

Hydrology...

Essex County Massachusetts and the Merrimack River in Hillsborough County New Hampshire and Middlesex County Massachusetts are the primary major flood regions in our area...having shifted from western Hartford County CT last Friday.

Already widespread rainfall reports of 4-11 inches across eastern Massachusetts and southwest New Hampshire. Widespread 60 hour storm totals of 6-12 inches expected...with isolated 15 inches amounts on the North Shore when all is said and done.

Kbox stp has an overall accurate assessment of maximum rainfall location
and the gradients. We still think the radar is underestimating
slightly...but its Worth looking at its one hour precipitation estimates.

Many rivers in flood...some of it major or approaching a flood of
record
(emphasis added). Please see the latest flood statements /bosflsbox/ and flood
warnings /bosflwbox/ for details.
